The symbols below were designed for Metalprices.com by the artist Murray Robertson.  The designs are influenced by historical symbols used in the ancient science of Alchemy.  Alchemy is perhaps most famous (infamous) for its attempts to find combinations of metals to create gold or silver. BISMUTH  - most common traditional alchemical symbol - color reflects bismuth's pink tinge
 


SELENIUM -  moon symbol and composite lunar surface (flipped around from the original to save confusion with Silver)


MANGANESE - adapted the symbol from an old electromagnet

 


 BRONZE - copper and tin icons combined - background features bronze age shield motifs


SILICON -  symbol and background based on schematics of early chips.
 


TANTALUM -  a crown to represent King Tantalus
 


SILVER  traditional alchemical and astrological moon symbol - lunar surface


OIL -  traditional alchemical symbol for oil - background features oil pressure gauge


NATURAL GAS - gas flame in sphere (quite a tough one to come up with!).


TITANIUM -  a titan based on Celtic Iron Age motifs

 


GERMANIUM -  based on German eagle iconography

 


GOLD -  most common alchemical and astrological symbol - background features astrological and alchemical charts


MAGNESIUM - element symbol as used by Dalton in 1700s - leaves in background reflect the importance of Magnesium's role in photosynthesis


INDIUM -  used in the aviation industry for ball bearings
 


TUNGSTEN -  a "W" based on bulb filament coil
 


IRON - also Mars - most common alchemical and astrological symbol - background features surface of Mars
 


BRASS -  most common traditional alchemical symbol - background features antique brass plaque

 


CADMIUM  -based on alchemical symbol for "calamine" ( Latin "cadmia") circa 1780 from which the name derives - composite metallic background with Roman text


Antimony - most common traditional alchemical symbol
 


Columbium (Niobium) propeller image suggesting the use of niobium in the aviation industry


TELLURIUM -  traditional alchemical symbol for "earth" element - (Latin "Tellus") - earth surface map


WOLFRAMITE -   wolf head - metallic background from sample of wolframite

 


COBALT - adapted  symbol originally created for nickel to represent "kobald" or gremlin from which the name derives - background from Chinese porcelain using cobalt blue


CHROMIUM -    This is a representation of the electron shell configuration of chromium featuring multiple reflective spheres - chrome hub cap background


VANADIUM - symbol based on old Norse statuette of the goddess Freya (latin "Vanadis") - background from old Norse standing stone


PALLADIUM - symbol for the comet Pallas as used by astronomers - background features astronomical chart


MERCURY - also planet - most common alchemical and astrological symbol - composite metallic background


MOLYBDENUM - adapted  symbol originally created for lead as these elements being of similar appearance were often mistaken for each other
